As we shake off the chill of winter and look forward to longer, sunnier days, it’s the perfect time to give your roof a bit of TLC.
In the UK, our roofs endure months of rain, wind, frost - and sometimes snow - so a seasonal check-up is key to keeping everything in good shape before the summer sets in.
Here’s a simple checklist to get your roof ready for the warmer months ahead:

Check for Winter Wear and Tear
British winters are often wet and blustery, which can loosen tiles, damage flashing, and block drainage points. Start with a ground-level inspection and look for:
-Slipped or cracked roof tiles
-Moss build-up
-Damaged or loose flashing around chimneys or roof windows
-Water staining on soffits and fascias
Top tip: If you notice any issues but don’t fancy climbing up yourself, consider hiring a roofer for a quick inspection – we know loads of them!

Clear Gutters and Downpipes
After a long winter of falling leaves and debris, your gutters and downpipes may be clogged - leading to overflows that damage masonry and woodwork.
-Remove moss, leaves and silt by hand or with a scoop
-Run water through downpipes to check for blockages
-Make sure brackets are secure and not sagging
In wetter parts of the UK, this step is especially important ahead of spring and summer showers.

Remove Moss and Algae
Moss is a common issue in the UK thanks to our damp climate. While a bit of moss isn’t always a problem, heavy build-up can:
-Block gutters
-Cause tiles to lift
-Hold moisture against your roof
You can gently brush it off with a soft broom (never a pressure washer—it can damage tiles), or use a moss-killing treatment specifically designed for roofs.

Trim Back Overhanging Trees
If you have trees near your property, trim any overhanging branches to:
-Prevent leaves and twigs from clogging gutters
-Reduce shade, which encourages moss growth
-Protect tiles from abrasion or impact in high winds
This is particularly useful for homes in more rural or wooded areas.

Check Loft Ventilation and Insulation
Proper loft ventilation helps prevent condensation, which can be a year-round issue in the UK. Signs of trouble include damp insulation, musty smells, or mould patches.
-Make sure soffit vents and roof ventilation tiles are clear
-Check your insulation is dry and evenly spread
-Avoid over-packing insulation, which can restrict airflow
Good airflow keeps your roof timbers dry and reduces heat build-up during any warm spells.
Bonus Tip: Book a Roof Inspection if in Doubt
If your roof is over 10–15 years old or has had past issues, a professional roofer can carry out a full inspection to spot problems before they get worse. It’s also a good idea to get your roof checked after any major storms.
Getting your roof ready for the warmer months doesn’t have to be a big job, but it can save you serious money and hassle in the long run. A bit of preventative maintenance now means you can enjoy the summer months without worrying about unexpected leaks or repairs.
If you're unsure about the condition of your roof or need a hand with any of the above, it’s always worth consulting a local roofing specialist.
